Urmila Goel

Research

Urmila is a cultural anthropologist and substitute professor at Humboldt University in Berlin. She has been researching migration from India to Germany since the late 1990s and has published extensively on the subject. Initially, her research interest stemmed from her own upbringing as the daughter of a migrant from Haryana and her involvement in Indo-German youth work. The more she engaged with the stories of nurses from Kerala, who were always part of her life, the more fascinated she became by this migration history. She began to research it scientifically, collect material, and develop the idea of an oral history archive. At WHO CARED, Urmila keeps the broader context in view, maintains connections with academia, and supports participants in conducting interviews.
